Amtrak Locomotives
The museum currently has two Amtrak locomotives on temporary loan from Dynamic Rail Preservation. These locomotives continue the narrative of passenger rail service in Nevada as it transitioned away from major railroad companies like Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Western Pacific to the national passenger rail carrier, Amtrak. These locomotives also continue our examination of the evolution of railroad technology through the late 20th century.
Amtrak Locomotive 231
An EMD F40PH built in 1977, the locomotive ran passenger service throughout the western United States until its retirement in 2001. The locomotive was a regular unit pulling Amtrak’s Desert Winds trains between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City.
Amtrak Locomotive 644
Built by EMD in 1974, the locomotive served with Amtrak until 1984 when it was acquired by the Santa Fe. The locomotive was modified for freight service where it operated extensively in the Mojave Desert as ATSF 5266. The locomotive was renumbered to BNSF 6976 following the Santa Fe and Burlington Northern merger. The locomotive currently appears in its blue and silver livery as part of a promotional tour between BNSF and Maersk Sealand.
